How do I use a pre-shave oil and what is a good guy?

I shave with a safety razor and shaving cream large but still I have some irritation. (Red flag, sometimes failures). It is a pre-shave oil for a smoother shave, and if so, which is good to use?

I shave with a razor and would certainly recommend using pre-shave oil. Rub a little before applying shaving cream. It should help the razor glide over the skin softer.
