Photography – Understanding How Image Stabilization lenses work

If you have not purchased the optical image stabilization, still may have heard the term "image stabilization" or "vibration reduction", as used in our reference developed diverse and shoot cameras and SLR lenses. In this case, you probably understand that the SE or VR technology and supposedly get sharper images. But technology does not really work, and how? What's really going to work? What works in all situations? And most importantly, how really need?

The answer to the first question is yes, image stabilization technology not only works, it works well. If he did not the rest of this article would be totally useless. But it is helpful to understand exactly what is image stabilization, and when you can use to improve your photos before paying a few hundred dollars more for a lens that has been integrated into it.

Note: Although the term "image stabilization" most frequently used by authors in the discussion about this, "vibration reduction" is Nikon uses the term to describe the same functionality in their objectives and also happens to best describe what happens. You should consider the two terms interchangeably.

To understand how the reduction vibration, consider for a moment that corrects. When a handheld camera, and opens the shutter for a period longer than the camera can be noted in one direction, without moving, then the resulting image is disappearing. What happens is that as the camera lens tilts up, sideways, or a combination of both, the image changes position based on the image sensor. A focused beam spot ends up being rendered as a line. All points accumulation of light that rose from the image result in a blurred image.

The obvious solution would be to move the image sensor by the same amount each point of light shifts, so the image and the image sensor motion and not in cells. Some camera manufacturers implement this exact solution, and the floating of the sensor image so you can track the movement of the image if the camera during exposure. But it is the exception not the rule. In general, the solution is obtained by adding the reduction target vibration, rather than the camera body.

So how does it work? In fact, it's pretty easy to understand. Instead of a sensor floating image, the lens body contains floating lens elements. The position of the lens elements is controlled by motors that are attached to sensors that detect the amount of the lens barrel is rotated vertically or horizontally for exposure.

If the lens body appears, telling sensors compensate drivers to abandon the floating lens elements slightly to keep the optical path of light traveling through the lens. If the lens barrel is facing the left, the lens move to the right elements to compensate. The end result is that the image maintains its position on the image sensor during exposure, creating an image much clearer if the vibration reduction system is turned off (can be).

It may seem surprising that the system can handle the camera moves well. It is indeed remarkable, but it works because all camera movements can be followed by every 1/1000th of a second, while the oscillation of the camera is produced in the timeline, for example, 1/30th, 1/15th or even 1/4th of a second.

Vendors of these lenses, image stabilization, argue technology that saves you about 3 to 4 stops in his statement. This means that if the same photographic situation, the slower the speed 1/125th shutter periodically the results of a second image is good, then added the reduction of vibration should be able to shoot maybe 1/15th or 1/8th of a second. This is a big problem if they are forced to take in the shadow and the light goes out, or you need to close the opening to increase depth of field.

But the image stabilization that proves itself in a range of shutter speeds that are neither too large nor too small. If you try to keep exposure to 1 second, it is unlikely that their compensation and virtual reality can keep up with the erratic movements that you provide. Similarly, if you are shooting at 1/500th of a second or more, the device will not have the opportunity to experience any flicker, and the VR system adds no improvement.

Another thing to remember about is Vibration Reduction that has to do with the compensation of camera movement during exposure. It has nothing to do with the speed of the object you are trying to photograph. As fast-moving baseball is always represented as a spot unless they can capture in 1/500th of a second.

What you need is or virtual reality glasses to improve your photography? It is quite easy to answer. If you are regularly takes at speeds below 1/250th of a second, then it is a very good chance you can release a significant number of these fuzzy or blurred shots when investing in an RV without embargo. Better yet, when you buy your digital camera then just go point and shoot, with built-in Vibration Reduction, or if you buy a digital SLR camera, try a vibration reduction model integrated with the supplied kit lens.
